Stand for Autism

About this Event

Tutors4Stars, through my ACT mission, partnered with Autism Society San Diego to create “Stand for Autism”, a fundraiser and advocacy event. During a time of nationwide turmoil regarding cuts in funding for neurodiverse programs, we gathered as many people as possible to stand with the autistic community and raise money for the Autism Society to continue supporting the autistic community. I am so grateful to say that we raised over $7,000 for them. At this event, I made sure that people knew why we were here. This wasn’t a protest nor an act of defiance. It was an event highlighting visibility: the idea that everyone, no matter how different, deserves to be seen. And that autism wasn’t something people should feel the need to hide – that our society needed an awakening that we were bringing on by standing together. My group of neurodiverse students, who I tutored in singing and dancing for years, performed in front of everyone for the first time, letting ourselves be seen by the world. “Stand for Autism” wasn’t just about money – it was about showing solidarity, taking the first step to changing our world for the better and creating a place where autism could be accepted.
